Kakkan Colony—Centre Speak

Background

Kakkan colony is a slum dwelling near the Besant Nagar bus terminus. The slum is served by a community center (originally used for the mid-day meal scheme), where Deepam runs its sessions. Volunteers use donated laptops to teach children at KC.

How long have we been teaching in KC?

Deepam has been teaching at Kakkan Colony since April 2009.

Student Profile

Deepam, at the moment, teaches about 30 students in the 5th-11th grades. The curriculum has also been consistently tweaked to make it suitable to students from diverse academic backgrounds.

Deepam team

Basu, Gokul and Chandana form the team that handles this center.

Support of the community

The community is extremely warm towards Deepam volunteers. We sometimes even have mothers joining us, avidly following our computer lessons! Once, there was a political rally that blared out songs from loudspeakers- during a class! All we had to do was politely request them to ‘stop the music’- they did so promptly and encouraged us to continue the good work. With such cooperation, the classes at KC are a pleasure.
